How can I clean my aquarium sponge filter without scattering dirt in the water?
When I take my sponge filter (in from a vacuum) from the bottom of the tank up out of the aquarium all the dirt and spills in water slurry. There not much left to wash the towel and the dirt is still floating in the water. I tried to enter the sponge with a paper towel or plastic bag over my hand to prevent dirt from floating away, but it is not working.
You do not need to change / clean your sponge unless you pick it up and press with your fingers and it does not bounce. If it bounces again, do nothing with it. The sponge is the primary host of beneficial bacteria in the tank. If you change, you will most likely send your tank through a mini-cycle that will stress your fish. If you press and it does not bounce, try to go out and rinse in a bucket of water treated with decholorinator. Once you rinse with water, if has yet to rebound, then you should replace it completely. You should not have to do this more than once every six months (or more).
