Single Serve Coffee Makers - Tassimo vs Keurig
There are tons of Single Cup Coffee Makers out there on the market. This is a testament to the advantages single serve coffee brewers offer to coffee consumers. They are efficient, easy to use, and have less mess than conventional coffee makers. Many reviews on the market look to bash different brands of coffee brewers because the competition is so high in the coffee industry. At the end of the day, each coffee brewer is different and as a consumer you should carefully weigh the options and benefits of each brand before you buy. After all, your single serve coffee brewer is something you're going to use everyday and live with for years!
Tassimo and Keurig are two of the biggest single serve coffee brands on the market. They each offer a different feel, style and certain luxuries that may not appeal to all customers. Both brands are great and we won't discourage you from buying either of them, but you should know which one suits your lifestyle best before you invest.
Tassimo Coffee Makers came onto the market the same time as Keurig in late 2006. In late 2010, the most popular Tassimo single serve coffee brewers are the T65 and Suprema model, which features a larger water reservoir and less "heat up time" than required of the Keurig models. Tassimo units use a "T-disc," which contains coffee grounds and even sometimes milk (for the latte products). The T-discs are very different than Keurig's K-Cups. T-discs come with a barcode printed on the top of the disc and the Tassimo machine actually reads the barcode before brewing coffee. Tassimo's machines change the brewing time and amount of water used to offer a customized cup of coffee automatically.
Keurig Coffee Makers uses "K-Cups" instead of T-discs and the machine does not automatically adjust brewing time for different blends. Keurig's most popular models today are the B70 and B76 Platinum Brewing System and the Special Edition Brewing System. Keurig also does not offer latte or milk-based coffee products (while Tassimo does). Keurig K-Cups also come in a much wider variety of coffee blends and flavors, and tends to be less expensive than T-discs.
Comparatively, Keurig is perfect for the coffee drinker who likes light to medium blends. A common complaint about Keurig is the fact that the coffee is too weak. This is due to the fact that the machine does not change brewing time or speed to account for larger cup sizes. The same amount of coffee is used for a 6-ounce cup of coffee as a 12-ounce cup of coffee. For drinkers who like lighter coffee, this complaint is not often heard. In fact, drinkers who enjoy light coffee often complain that Tassimo coffee tastes too strong.
Keurig has a smaller water reservoir than Tassimo. With a Tassimo coffee brewer, you will get two more cups of coffee out of the water reservoir than with a Keurig unit. That being said, Keurig is less expensive than Tassimo. Keurig's top home model is $180 and Tassimo's top home model is $200. Keurig K Cups are also less expensive and can be found on sale through many coffee retailers. T-discs are generally not on sale, but more popular brands are available.
Before buying either of these systems, it's important to weigh what you want out of your Single Cup Coffee Maker. If you want speed and customization, Tassimo is your better option. If you value coffee diversity and lighter blends, Keurig is the way to go!
