Tips on Use Of HDMI, DVI or Analog Cables

Use of HDMI cables has exceeded the use of it's predecessor the DVI cable as people look for the best reception and performance.  But as you consider the options it's not always that clear of a decision about the cable to use for all improvements in pictures for your television and computers.

DVI cable, (Digital Visual Interface), provides high visual quality on such devices as flat-screen computer monitors and other output devices. It is also used for video graphic cards and can be used to carry an analog signal. By using DVI cable versus VGA cable, there is no digital conversion that happens with a VGA cable. As the signal goes from digital to analog and back to digital with VGA cable, DVI cable transports the digital signal without converting to analog and back again. In recent years, most television sets and other devices have come standard with the DVI connection, making analog more obsolete and video quality better.

There are three types of DVI cable. The DVI-A supports only an analog signal and carries a DVI signal to an analog device. The DVI-D supports only a digital signal and carries a DVI signal to a digital device. The third type is the DVI-I which carries a DVI signal to either an analog or digital device, analog to analog and digital to digital. Unlike the HDMI cable, the DVI cable does not carry audio signals, so is not as diverse as the HDMI cable. It can, however, be used in applications requiring an HDMI cable for video signals.

HDMI cable, (High Definition Multimedia Interface), has grown in popularity over DVI cable for several reasons. Though video quality is equal to that of DVI, HDMI cable can be made longer without causing degradation of picture or audio and is less bulky than DVI cable. As mentioned above, HDMI cable also can carry audio signals.  There are two types of HDMI cable. Type A has 19 pins which is used primarily for home use on any HDMI compatible device. Type B has 29 pins for high resolution above 1080p and is generally used in commercial applications.

As far as video is concerned you would be pleased with the signal for both HDMI and DVI, they have their own special features.  They can be interchanged if you're aware of the differences.  Whichever one is chosen they will both provide a really good video signal for the modern digital component.
